Grey Noise Theatre Co. is an experimental theatre company based in Rochester, NY specializing in theatre for social change, theatre of the oppressed, stage intimacy, restorative justice, and representation of marginalized artists. They stage new works as well as original adaptations of beloved classic texts with a focus on bringing attention to themes of race, class, gender, and physical & mental ability. Their aesthetic is timeless and poignant, seamlessly weaving together well-worn plots and characters with contemporary issues, music, movement, and visual effects for the ultimate relevance.
Grey Noise Theater Company is a part of a local, regional, national, and global movement to tell stories that have been left out of the mainstream narrative and conversation put forward by the theatre. William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Eugene O’Neill… one thing many of the “classics” of the industry have in common is that they were written by people who had the power and privilege to put their stories onstage. Now, many theatre artists are holding the industry to a higher standard. We tell the stories from around the world that have not been included in that canon. We stage classic works using actors of all backgrounds who have been historically excluded from these roles. We reinterpret beloved tales to shine a light on inequality. We give a platform to storytellers who have been dubbed in the past as too “fringe,” “edgy,” or “niche.”
We lift up voices.
