Founded in 2006 as a means for artists to give back to the community, Rochester’s Black Sheep Theatre is a coalition of theatre artists dedicated to providing service and educational opportunities for its members. The group stages three main stage productions a year at their performance studio at the Village Gate Square. The group also hosts NextFest, an annual festival of new and emerging artists, along with readings, scripted performances, and master classes in acting and other theatre arts.
Vision
We envision a society where creativity and individuality are valued above convention and conformity; where people are free to live a full, rich, and rewarding life, doing work they love.
Mission
To fulfill this Vision, we provide:
An extraordinary live performance experience, with an emphasis on interactive, unique and experimental formats and emerging artists.
Service opportunities for participating artists to give back to the community.
Educational opportunities for students to develop communication, collaboration, teamwork, interpersonal and creative skills for a life-long journey of learning.
Charter Values
Individuality. We encourage and enable our artists and audience to express their uniqueness through their experience in the performing arts.
Willingness to Risk. We hold the self-evident truths that with risk comes reward, and the universe rewards action.
We therefore hold in highest regard our artists’ willingness to risk their ideas by putting them into action in exchange for the possibility of failure and ridicule from others, as well as the satisfaction of success.
Inclusion. We embrace, accept and value ideas from all dedicated artists, without regard to race, color, creed, gender, background, or life experience.
Artistic Excellence. We actively seek out collaborative opportunities with artists who take their work seriously, are devoted to developing their talents, and desire to grow as artists and continuously improve their skills.
